The DOT Physical:
Everything Drivers & Employers Need to Know
E-Z DOT Physicals at 84 Chiropractic stands out as Washington County’s top choice for DOT physicals due to our expertise and commitment to ensuring drivers meet Department of Transportation standards with thorough and efficient examinations.
What is a DOT physical?
To qualify for driving commercial vehicles, you must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam. This assessment ensures you’re fit to safely operate large or passenger-carrying vehicles, meeting essential safety standards.
Who needs a DOT physical?
To pursue a career operating large commercial vehicles, you must acquire a CDL (commercial driver’s license) and maintain a valid DOT medical card. This card is granted following a successful completion of a DOT physical examination, which must be renewed every 1-2 years.
You should undergo a DOT physical examination if:
- Have a Commercial Driver’s License
- Transport hazardous materials
- Drive a vehicle carrying over 15 passengers
- Employed to drive a vehicle carrying more than 8 passengers
- Operate a vehicle with a combined weight exceeding 10,000 pounds
Great spot! I was a first time walk in for my CDL physical and was taken back right away. Fast and courteous. They also take all kinds of payments methods according to the signage. Cash, Venmo etc. If they treat there chiropractic patients the same as there walk in physicals then You will def be impressed here.

What to expect

The DOT physical exam typically includes

- Vision assessment, requiring at least 20/40 visual acuity in each eye with or without corrective lenses, and a minimum peripheral vision of 70″.
- Hearing evaluation, where you should be able to hear a “forced whisper” from five feet away, with or without hearing aids.
- Blood pressure measurement, with specific limits for passing.
- Urine test, not for drug use but to screen for underlying conditions like diabetes.
- Sleep apnea screening, especially if you report symptoms like daytime drowsiness, morning headaches, gasping while sleeping, or heavy snoring.
- A thorough physical examination covering eyes, ears, mouth, heart, lungs, abdomen, spine, extremities, and neurological system to detect any potential issues or injuries.
Additionally, the exam may cover other health indicators relevant to safe commercial vehicle operation.
FAQs

Are there specific medical conditions that could disqualify me from passing a DOT physical?
Yes, certain medical conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, epilepsy, certain cardiovascular issues, and poor vision may disqualify you from passing a DOT physical.
What documentation should I bring to my DOT physical appointment?
You should bring your driver’s license, any necessary corrective lenses or hearing aids, a list of current medications, and relevant medical history information
Can I take prescription medications and still pass a DOT physical?
In many cases, taking prescription medications is allowed, but it depends on the specific medication and its potential impact on your ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle. It’s essential to disclose all medications to the medical examiner.
How long does a DOT physical examination typically take?
A DOT physical examination usually 15-20 minutes, depending on the complexity of the medical history and any additional tests required
What happens if I don’t pass my DOT physical?
If you don’t pass your DOT physical, you may be disqualified from operating a commercial motor vehicle. The specific steps to take will depend on the reasons for disqualification and whether any medical issues can be addressed or mitigated.
Can I choose my own healthcare provider for a DOT physical, or do I have to go to a specific DOT-certified medical examiner?
You must visit a medical examiner listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners to ensure that the examination meets DOT standards. You cannot use your regular healthcare provider unless they are certified as a DOT medical examiner.
What if I have an out-of-state license?
Dr. Piasecki is federally authorized through the FMCSA to provide DOT physicals to any resident of any state in the United States. 84 Chiropractic routinely sees drivers from West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, and many others as we are located near the 84 Truck Stop
