What to Bring:
- Valid driver’s license: This is required for identification during the exam.
- List of current medications Knowing your medications helps Dr. Joe assess any potential interactions.
- Vision correction aids (glasses, contacts) Ensure you bring what you need for a clear vision test.
- Medical records for relevant conditions (if applicable) If you have any pre-existing conditions, Dr. Joe may need to review your medical history.
DOT Exam Process:
- Review of medical history and medications. We’ll discuss your overall health and any medications you’re taking.
- Physical examination including blood pressure, vision, and hearing tests. This comprehensive exam ensures you meet the DOT physical requirements.
- Urinalysis (not a drug test). This is a routine test and it helps assess your overall health.
- Additional tests may be required for specific conditions. In some cases, further testing might be necessary.
Passing the DOT Physical:
- Meets vision requirements (20/40 correctable vision in each eye). Demonstration of adequate vision with or without corrective lenses is required.
- Manages blood pressure within FMCSA guidelines (may require medication). Controlled blood pressure is essential for safe driving.
- Does not have uncontrolled diabetes requiring insulin injections. Certain diabetes management methods are acceptable.
- Free from disqualifying medical conditions affecting safe driving. Your health and well-being are our top priority.
DOT Medical Card Validity:
- Typically valid for 2 years. Your certification allows you to operate a commercial vehicle for this period.
- We will issue a shorter medical card (typically one year) if you have a condition requiring ongoing monitoring. This ensures we can check in more frequently to make sure your condition stays under control.
Failing the DOT Physical:
- Common reasons include high blood pressure or uncontrolled diabetes. Even with these conditions, you may still be eligible to pass your DOT physical as long as they are well-managed.
- You may need a follow-up exam for certain health conditions. Depending on the situation, a follow-up exam might be necessary.
Drug Testing:
- Not part of the DOT physical, but may be required by employers. Be aware that some employers conduct separate drug tests
Waivers & Exemptions:
- Consult a medical professional regarding waivers or exemptions for specific health conditions. Dr. Joe can advise you on options if you have a qualifying condition.
We look forward to helping you get back on the road!
