Can You Pass a DOT Physical with Multiple Sclerosis?

Yes, you can pass a DOT physical with MS. The FMCSA allows certification if you meet specific health criteria related to DOT physicals and Multiple Sclerosis. The Medical Expert Panel (MEP) created clear guidelines to protect public safety while allowing stable drivers with MS to stay on the road.

What FMCSA Requires for for Drivers with MS

To qualify for a DOT medical card, you must meet all of the following:

Clear Vision

Your eyesight must be sharp and stable. You need normal acuity, full visual fields, and proper eye alignment.

Normal Cognitive Function

You must complete a standardized neuropsychological test. The results must show you can safely operate a commercial motor vehicle.

Strong Motor Skills and Mobility

You must demonstrate full control of your muscles. No tremors, weakness, or coordination problems should affect your driving capabilities, especially if you have Multiple Sclerosis.

No Excessive Fatigue

Your MS should not cause unpredictable fatigue. Fatigue that disrupts your ability to drive safely is disqualifying.

Mood Must Be Stable

You can’t have an untreated mood disorder. If you do have one, it must be well-controlled and documented.

No Relapse or MS Progression

You must remain relapse-free. Signs of MS progression will disqualify you from certification.

Neurologist Clearance

Your neurologist must clear you to drive. A detailed letter from your specialist is required before we can issue your DOT card for Multiple Sclerosis.

6-Month Certification Limit

FMCSA limits drivers with MS to a 6-month DOT medical card. You must return for re-evaluation every 6 months for a physical when living with Multiple Sclerosis.

What to Bring to Your DOT Physical with Multiple Sclerosis

Come prepared to your appointment. Bring:

  • A letter from your neurologist stating you are fit to drive
  • Results of any recent cognitive or physical testing
  • A complete list of your medications
  • Any assistive devices (braces, canes, etc.) you use daily

This documentation will help speed up your appointment and reduce delays for your DOT physical if you have Multiple Sclerosis.

Tips to Help You Pass

  1. Schedule a checkup with your neurologist first.
  2. Get all required testing done in advance.
  3. Bring every document we need to review.
  4. Manage fatigue and stress before your appointment.
  5. Be honest about your symptoms.

At E-Z DOT Physicals, we know the system. We’ll guide you through each step.
